Cognitive psychology
Mental structures that organise experience, memory and interpretation.
Workshop study / 2026
A transdisciplinary examination of schema at the intersection of cognitive psychology, knowledge representation, communication studies and medical behavioural science.
Abstract / Conceptual intersections
“Schema” is a widely used concept, yet its emphasis differs across disciplines. The study places these interpretations alongside one another and reveals their shared structure.
It follows the use of the concept in cognitive psychology, knowledge representation associated with artificial-intelligence research, communication studies and medical behavioural science. Its historical and theoretical arc extends from Kant through Bartlett, Piaget and Neisser to Minsky, Rumelhart, Goffman, Entman, Beck, Young and Leventhal.
The central question is how schemas organise perception, memory, meaning-making and action, and how these organising patterns can become sources of distortion.
Mental structures that organise experience, memory and interpretation.
Frames, scripts and networks that organise knowledge in machines and cognition.
Processes of framing and meaning-making that determine what becomes visible.
Schemas underlying illness perception, prevention and adaptation.
